Conflicts in the Northwest Territory President Washington faced conflict with Native Americans and foreign threats to American shipping. He advised Americans to avoid political divisions and involvement in European affairs.

Treaty not being followed. Treaty of 1783 said Britain would withdraw its forts from United States within “a reasonable time”. 10 years later still British forts still were there and the British were supplying Native American groups with guns and ammunition. British hoped to limit American settlement in the Northwest Territory 23.07.2018

Expansion Many American leaders believed that the country depended on settling the West. Migration of settlers west increased. Native Americans joined together to oppose American settlement. By 1790, federal government had bought much of the Native Americaan's lands south of the Ohio River. But Native Americans in the Northwest were refusing to sell. 23.07.2018

Washington Sends Troops In 1790, Washington sent troops to the Northwest Territory. 3 major battles. Native Americans led by Little Turtle of the Miami Nation and Blue Jacket of the Shawnees. Native Americans win first 2 battles. The 2nd was the worst defeat US troops ever suffered in a battle with Native Americans. 23.07.2018

Battle of Fallen Timbers In 1794, George Washington sent Gen. Anthony Wayne as troop leader. He wins the Battle of Fallen Timbers. This battle brokethe Native Americans hold on the Northwest. 23.07.2018

Treaty of Greenville In 1795, Native Americans surrendered most of their lands in the part of the Northwest Territory that is now Ohio through the Treaty of Greenville. 23.07.2018

French Revolution The French Revolution began in 1789. At first Americans supported the effort of the French people to overthrow their king. By 1793, the US was split on support due to the growing violence in France. 23.07.2018

Split Opinions Federalists Democratic-Republicans Federalist opposed the resolution. Federalist concerned support would hurt trade. Democratic-Republicans Supported France, saying some violence is expected in the fight for freedom 23.07.2018

Washington's Proclamation 1793-Britain and France at war. Republicans support France. Federalists support Britain. President Washington issued a proclamation that said the U.S. would remain neutral but would trade with both sides. Neither Britain or France happy with that decision. 23.07.2018

Jay goes to negotiate Britain begins to seize American ships, to stop them from traiding with the enemy. Often the went on to force American sailors off those ships to have to serve for Britain. Washington sent John Jay to negotiate a treaty. John Jay negotiates treaty with Britain. In 1795 Jay returned to George Washington with a treaty. 23.07.2018

Jay's Treaty The treaty said that the U.S. agreed to pay debts owed to British merchants. Britain agreed to pay for the ships it had seized and to withdraw its troops from the Northwest Territory. They still didn't stop impressing sailors and it refused to recognize U.S. right to trade with France. 23.07.2018

Treaty stirs up controversy Republicans opposed Jay's Treaty. They said it gave away too much and got too little. But the Federalist-controlled Senate approved it to keep peace with Britain. 23.07.2018

Farewell Controversy discourages Washington and he publishes his Farewell Address at the end of his second term. He advises against political divisions. He encourages that the United States stay out of European Affairs. 23.07.2018
