Treaty of 1783 said Britain would withdraw its forts from United States within “a reasonable time”. 10 years later still British forts still were there and the British were supplying Native American groups with guns and ammunition. Expansion Many American leaders believed that the country depended on settling the West. Migration of settlers west increased. Native Americans joined together to oppose American settlement. By 1790, federal government had bought much of the Native Americaan's lands south of the Ohio River. But Native Americans in the Northwest were refusing to sell. 23.07.2018

Washington Sends Troops In 1790, Washington sent troops to the Northwest Territory. 3 major battles. Native Americans led by Little Turtle of the Miami Nation and Blue Jacket of the Shawnees. Washington's Proclamation 1793-Britain and France at war. Republicans support France. Federalists support Britain. President Washington issued a proclamation that said the U.S. would remain neutral but would trade with both sides. Neither Britain or France happy with that decision. 23.07.2018

Jay goes to negotiate Britain begins to seize American ships, to stop them from traiding with the enemy. Often the went on to force American sailors off those ships to have to serve for Britain. Jay's Treaty The treaty said that the U.S. agreed to pay debts owed to British merchants. Britain agreed to pay for the ships it had seized and to withdraw its troops from the Northwest Territory.
