Textbook Transformation on Math1121_Introduction to Statistics Symposium on the Future of Educational Resources Open Mathematics in Action Textbook Transformation on Math1121_Introduction to Statistics Jing Kersey 01/13/2017

Abstract East Georgia State College offers 8-12 sections (30-40 students in each section) of Math1121_Introduction to Statistics across Swainsboro, Statesboro, and Augusta campuses. 5 instructors are teaching this course. The standard textbook and homework platform are ‘Beginning Statistics’ and Hawkes Learning System. As the only one working on textbook transformation for Math1121_Introduction to Statistics, I will share my experience using OpenStax textbook and homework platform WebAssign, including benefits, challenges, my strategies, result, and future plan.

Benefits OpenStax & WebAssign save each student about $40. OpenStax textbook—’Introductory Statistics’ explains the statistics topics in depth. WebAssign is simple to use. College of Coastal Georgia provides a lot of resources supporting the textbook: PPTs, videos.

Challenges Topic Organization is different—course schedule Pre/Post test ACE tutoring Critical thinking assessments. OpenStax textbook is a little hard for our students. Limited question pool and lack of feedback in WebAssign--big drawback for online students.

My Strategy Align the topics with the Hawkes textbook

My Strategy Align the topics with the Hawkes textbook

My Strategy Extra homework solving sections Solve almost all assigned homework problems in class. Add more office hours to help students with homework assignments. Suggest students form study groups. Use the same exams and critical thinking assessments to compare learning results.

Results Success Rate: 31/34=91.2% # of students enrolled in CRN80390: 34 # of students passed: 31 (success rate=91.2%) # of students with WebAssign access: 29 Average in homework assignments: 74.08

Results Comparison to previous courses (Not reliable) Term CRN # Pre Homework Platform Success Rate Pre Test Post Change % of Spring 2016 20346 29 Hawkes 89.6% 13.5% 75.6% 62.1% 460% 20345 34 91.2% 15.8% 81.5% 65.7% 412% 20134 Online 27 74.1% -- 20724 12 66.7% Fall 80390 WebAssign 11.4% 79.1% 67.7% 594%

Future Plan Working on Solution Manuals for students. Request WebAssign to be integrated in D2L. Comparing learning results between sections using two different textbooks--Spring 2017. Possible to use OpenStax & WebAssign for Math1121 online sections—Fall 2017. Sharing results with other instructors.
