Scientific Method Science 4.1 Vocabulary Cards Mrs. Sage 4th Grade-Sheffey Elementary

Hypothesis If…………………..then

A prediction about what will happen in the experiment

Procedure

The rules and steps of the experiment

Materials

The items you will need to conduct the experiment

Experiment

Where you complete the procedure and actually do the steps.

Variables Once I use hot water. Once I use cold water.

Things that are changed during the experiment

Manipulated Variable

things that are changed by the person (man) doing the experiment things that are changed by the person (man) doing the experiment. They were changed on purpose.

Responding Variable

The effect of the manipulated variable. What happens when the manipulated variable was changed. The effect of the manipulated variable.

Constant

Things that stay the same during the experiment. They never change.

Observations

What you can see happening during the experiment.

Results

What happened during your experiment. You record this.

Qualitative Data The water got hotter. The plant grew. The bottle expanded. The car went faster. The sugar dissolved.

Data or results that do not include number.

Quantitative Data The water temperature was 101 degrees F. The plant is 65 inches tall. The bottle grew 7 cm. The car was going 10 miles per hour. It took 45 seconds for the sugar to dissolve.

Data or results that do include numbers.

Conclusion

Was you hypothesis right or wrong Was you hypothesis right or wrong? You explain how you were right or wrong.
