Probiotics Robbie Klahn Kaplan University HW499-01: Bachelor's Capstone in Health and Wellness Prof: Kristin Henningsen 07/19/2017 Good after noon. My Name is Robbie Klahn and today I will be talking about probiotics.

Topics covered in this presentation. What are probiotics Where to get them Probiotics and disease Three topics that we are going to discuss today are what are probiotics, where to get them, and some diseases that can be treated by them.

What are probiotics The word "probiotic" is a compound of two Greek words: "pro," to signify promotion of and "biotic," which means life.

What are Probiotics? Cont. Microorganisms Bacteria Fungus Probiotics contain microorganisms, most of which are bacteria similar to the beneficial bacteria that occur naturally in the human gut.

Types of bacteria Lactobacillus Bifidobacterium Saccharomyces The most-studied species include Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, and Saccharomyces. Lactobacillus acidophilus is a form of bacteria that’s found naturally in the body, usually in the intestines, mouth, or female genitals. It’s considered beneficial to human health because the bacteria doesn’t cause disease. Bifidobacterium bacteria are some of the first microbes to take up residence in the gastro-intestinal (GI) tract of newborns, and they dominate the intestines in breast-fed babies. Saccharomyces boulardii is a yeast, which is a type of fungus. Saccharomyces boulardii was previously identified as a unique species of yeast, but is now believed to be a strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae (baker's yeast).

Where to get probiotics? Over the counter(OTC) Prescription Through food Probiotics can be purchased over the counter at your local grocery store or health food stores. If your primary care physician demes it necessary for treatment you can get a prescription for them. You can also get probiotics in the foods you eat.

Foods with probiotics. Kefir Sauerkraut Miso Soup Pickles Kimchi Kefir is Similar to yogurt, this fermented dairy product is a unique combination of goat’s milk and fermented kefir grains. Sauerkraut is made from fermented cabbage (and sometimes other vegetables), sauerkraut is not only extremely rich in healthy live cultures. Miso is one the mainstays of traditional Japanese medicine and is commonly used in macrobiotic cooking as a digestive regulator. Made from fermented rye, beans, rice or barley. The pickle packs a punch of prime probiotics. In the U.S., the term “pickle” usually refers to pickled cucumbers specifically, but most vegetables can be pickled. All of them boast the same briny goodness and probiotic potential. Kimchi is an Asian form of pickled sauerkraut, kimchi is an extremely spicy and sour fermented cabbage.

Conditions That May Benefit from Probiotic Use Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) Colic Necrotizing enterocolitis Crohn disease Probiotics can be used to treat many diseases and conditions Things like IBS, Colic Necrotizing enterocolitis and crones disease are often treated with drugs prescribed by your primary care provider. Wouldn’t it be nice to ingest something more natural then a chemical.

Summery The word "probiotic" is a compound of two Greek words: "pro," to signify promotion of and "biotic," which means life. Three topics that we discussed today are what are probiotics, where to get them, and some diseases that can be treated by them.
