MATH Essential Questions Why do we say multiplication and division are inverse operations? How can that help you make division easier? MATH Essential Questions

Write in Your Interactive Notebook on the Left Side (Your Side) Solve 422 – 287 814 – 375 1,010 – 833 2,185 – 1,459 Write in Your Interactive Notebook on the Left Side (Your Side)

In This Lesson… In this lesson, you will learn about special rules for dividing with 0 and 1. You can use what you know about multiplying with 0 and 1 to help you find these special rules.

Write in Your Interactive Notebook on the Left Side (Your Side) What do you think Special Quotients are? Write in Your Interactive Notebook on the Left Side (Your Side)

PAIR SHARE Describe a time when you had to share 3 things equally between yourself and 2 friends.

Dividing by Zero What is the rule for multiplying any number by 0? When you divide any number by 0, the quotient will ALWAYS be 0. EXAMPLE: 8 ÷ 0 = 0 If you divide 0 by any number, the quotient will also be 0. EXAMPLE: 0 ÷ 7 = 0

Write in Your Interactive Notebook on the Left Side (Your Side) Practice 36 ÷ 0 0 ÷ 10 451 ÷ 0 0 ÷ 79 Write in Your Interactive Notebook on the Left Side (Your Side)

Fact Families with Zero Write the fact family for the following numbers: 8, 0, and 0 2, 0 and 0 What do you notice about these fact families? Write in Your Interactive Notebook on the Left Side (Your Side)

Dividing By One What is the Identity Property of Division? When you divide any number by 1, the quotient is that number. EXAMPLE: 15 ÷ 1 = 15

Write in Your Interactive Notebook on the Left Side (Your Side) Practice 7 ÷ 1 42 ÷ 1 1 ÷ 1 14, 678 ÷ 1 Write in Your Interactive Notebook on the Left Side (Your Side)

Fact Families with One Write the fact family for the following numbers: 12, 1, 12 37, 1, 37 403, 1, 403

It’s Your Turn Draw a triangle using construction paper. Use a ruler to measure the three sides so they are equal. Create a fact family using the Zero Property or Identity Property for Division inside the triangle. See if a friend can create a fact family from your triangle. Let’s hang them up!

Wrapping It Up In tis lesson, we learned about the special rules for dividing with 0 and 1.
