Exploring the Americas Discovering America

Columbus did not discover America. He tried to find east Asia He found the Caribbean Sea instead He opened the way for many more explorers and adventurers

Spain began their conquest of the Americas by sending conquistadores to the New World Cortez defeated Montezuma and the Aztecs Pizarro defeated the Incas

England looked for a Northwest Passage through North America Wanted to find a waterway to Asia Claimed most of the land in the north for England

Fierce competition between Spain and England Each nation wanted total claim to the New World Each wanted to be the most powerful in the world They fought because Spain was Catholic and England was Protestant King Philip of Spain sent his fleet of war ships (the Spanish Armada) to defeat England and Queen Elizabeth England won proving their independence and that Spain could be defeated
