3. European Conflicts Spain v Portugal Spain v Netherlands Spain v France Spain v England *** Spain’s attention was divided between fighting in Europe and Colonization in the Americas. The Defeat of Spanish Armada by the British in 1588 shifted the balance of power in Europe from Spain to England. England controlled the Seas and thus the routes to the new world. After the 1588 defeat Spain concentrated on what they had in the Americas, and not obtaining more land in the new world
