What’s new for A-levels? In 2017, all subjects had converted to two-year courses: PHASE 1 In 2015, the following A-levels became two-year courses: Art & Design, Business, Economics, English Literature, English Language, History, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Psychology and Sociology PHASE 2 In 2016, the following subjects become two-year courses: French, Geography, German, Music, Physical Education, Religious studies PHASE 3 In 2017, the following subjects will also become two-year courses. Accounting, Product Design, Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Applied or Medical Science

Changes to other courses in recent years Applied A-levels have been phased out Health & Social Care is now offered as a Level 3 BTEC course. This still contains a required examination component but ensures that this highly successful course can continue to be a highly practical vocational course. BTEC Sport Level 3 (double option) will continue to be offered and will contain a required examination component. Offering CTEC level 3 Performing Arts this year, which will be taught at Friary & Netherstowe ICT Cambridge Technicals have been updated in line with new government requirements

Two year A-levels The new AS levels are equivalent to 40% of a full-A level AS content is similar but different methods of assessment Longer-term focus for A-level requires different skills and emphasis

A two year programme 3 course programme for most students (A-levels, BTEC, Cambridge Technical) Option to discuss 4 courses for students with a grade A average at GCSE level High achievement in 3 courses to access university places and opportunities beyond school

Entry criteria The requirement to study 3 A Level/Level 3 courses will be an ‘Attainment 8’ average points score of at least 5.0. To calculate the points score: Assign each GCSE/Level 2 equivalent qualification a score from 1 (G) to 8 (A*), or for Eng & Ma (1(1) to 9 (9)) Double the scores for English Language and Mathematics, Add the scores for the best 6 other grades and Divide the total by ten. 9 8 A* BTEC Distinction* 7 A BTEC Distinction 6 B ITQ Certificate BTEC Merit 5 C BTEC Level 2 Pass 4 D   3 E 2 F 1 G

Examples STUDENT A GCSE English Language 5 5 x 2 = 10 GCSE English Literature 5 5 GCSE Mathematics 4 4 x 2 = 8 GCSE Combined Science 55 GCSE French Philosophy & Ethics 4 Disregard Disregard (lowest) GCSE Art 6 6 BTEC L2 Performing Arts Merit 50÷10 = 5.0 (C AVERAGE) The student above has an ‘Attainment 8’ score of 5.0 and would therefore take a 3 course programme in the Sixth Form. He/She would still be restricted in courses they would be eligible to start.

Examples STUDENT B GCSE English Language 6 6 x 2 =12 GCSE English Literature 6 6 GCSE Mathematics 6 6 x 2 = 12 GCSE Combined Science 6,6 GCSE German 6 Product Design 7 7 History GCSE PE 6 (Disregard as only 8 qualifications needed) 61÷10 = 6.1 (B+ AVERAGE) The student above has an ‘Attainment 8’ score of 6.1 and would take a 3 course programme in the Sixth Form. Most courses are accessible based on current entry criteria.

Examples STUDENT C GCSE English Language 7 7 x 2 =14 GCSE English Literature 6 6 GCSE Mathematics 7 7 x 2 = 14 GCSE Additional Maths 6 GCSE Biology 7 7 GCSE Chemistry 6 (Disregard) GCSE Physics 7 Level 2 ITQ Certificate (ICT) GCSE Geography 8 8 History 6 Philosophy & Ethics 8 * 70÷10 = 7.0 The student above has an ‘Attainment 8’ score of 7.0 and would be able to discuss taking a 4 course programme in the Sixth Form.
