Presentation transcript:

Fifth Grade Weekly News Weeks of: March 28-April 8 Reading Students are working on analyzing informational texts by looking at key features such as main idea, author’s purpose, and academic vocabulary. We are also working on inferring and applying their background knowledge to understand the topic while reading an informational text. We will be wrapping up nonfiction and moving back into fictional texts to begin the fourth quarter. Math In math, fifth grade will be working on analyzing and interpreting data from line plots. We will also work on creating line plots based on data gathered from surveys done throughout the building. Once we have mastered line plots, we will move back into fractions. During this unit, students will continue working on adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions. We will be doing this through project-based learning, where students will be learning how to work with fractions through real-life applications. As always, continue to work with your child on basic multiplication and division facts. Students should be reading for at least 30 minutes. Make sure to sign reading logs! Writing Students will be completing their animal communication book chapter. We will be completing this assignment by going through the writing process of editing and publishing. This will conclude our work on writing a research paper for the third marking period. James.messina@new-haven.k12.ct.us Jessica.magalhaes@new-haven.k12.ct.us
