A Bit of Background Book by Arthur Laurents with Music by Richard Rodgers and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim Sondheim was rather disinterested in the project but felt obligated There was so much drama between Laurents, Rodgers, and Sondheim

Act 1 Summary Leona, the Yeagers, and the McIlhennys all check into the Pensione Floria in Venice Signora Fiora (an Italian business woman) is their hostess The following morning, Leona meets Renato Di Rossi (a shopkeeper) He offers to help Leona while she is in Venice, but she declines The next day, Renato sends a package to Leona before showing up himself to ask her out Leona later finds out that Renato is married Eddie and Floria get together Leona confronts Renato. The act ends with her contemplating what she wants to do about the situation

Act 2 Summary Eddie returns to Jennifer. The next day he takes her out and tells her that he wants to return to America to save their marriage. Renato brings Leona a garnet necklace and asks her to stay in Venice At a party, Leona ends up paying for the necklace Leona realizes Renato only wanted her money, not her Leona reveals the affair between Floria and Eddie The next day everyone checks out. Renato arrives before Leona leaves. They make amends, but realize they can only be friends and Leona leaves
