Tides.
Tides are periodic rises and falls of large bodies of water. Tides are caused by the gravitational pull of the moon and inertia. Most coastal areas see.

Essential Question: What causes tides in the oceans?
Tides In addition to seasons and moon phases, students need to know the effects resulting from cyclical movements of the Sun, Earth, and Moon as they relate.

Moon Phases, Tides, & Earth’s Shape Een.1.1.2 Explain how the Earth’s rotation and revolution about the Sun affect its shape and is related to seasons and tides.

Moon Observation How does the moon change over the course of the month? 2. Do you know the name of any moon phases? 3. Prediction: What causes the moon phases to change?

Why does the Moon have Phases? Moon has phases because it orbits the Earth, which causes the portion we see illuminated to change. Moon take 27.3 days to orbit Earth Lunar Phase Cycle (New Moon to New Moon) is 29.5 days

Moon Phases New Moon: Moon is so close to sun that side of the Moon Facing Earth is not Illuminated Full Moon: Moon is behind Earth in space with respect to the Sun. As sun sets Moon is fully exposed to sunlight.

Moon Phases New Moon Waxing Crescent First Quarter Waxing Gibbous Moon Full Moon Waning Gibbous Last Quarter Half Moon Waning Crescent Moon Phases

Moon Phases More Realistic

Tides Tides: Periodic rise and fall of large bodies of water. Caused by the gravitational interaction between Earth and the Moon. Gravity is the force that causes tides.

Tides On the side of the Earth closest to the moon, the force of gravity is greater. Gravity pulls water in the direction of the moon, creates a tidal bulge. Side farthest from Moon water is also pulled and it creates an equally large bulge.

News Flash: How much does the moon move each day? Tides News Flash: How much does the moon move each day? Not much

Stand in one place for 24 hours and you would see 4 tides. Moons slight movement, causes the tide to remain in the same place as the Earth rotates. Stand in one place for 24 hours and you would see 4 tides. 2 high tides and 2 low tides

Tides Sun affects the tides during new and full moons. Sun & Moon align during these times and increase the pull of gravity causing a larger tidal range. Tidal range: the difference in height between successive high and low tides.

Spring Tides Tides have the greatest tidal range due to alignment of the Earth-moon-sun system.

Neap Tide Occurs during 1st and 3rd quarter moons. Gravitation pull of sun and moon slightly cancel each other out. Produces the lowest tidal range.

Spring & Neat Tides Both Spring & neap tide occur twice a month. Largest tidal range in the World- Bay of Fundy Nova Scotia, Canada http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qfhNjpu_IU4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGU8JuzIjU8

Earth is classified as an oblate spheroid or ellipsoid. Earth Circumference Earth is classified as an oblate spheroid or ellipsoid. Not a true sphere

Earth’s Circumference Circumference around equator is larger than around the poles.

Earth’s Circumference The equatorial bulge at Earth’s equator is caused by the planets rotation and gravity. Naturally, gravity causes planets and other celestial bodies to contract and form a sphere. The mass of an object as close to the center of gravity (Earth’s core in this case) as possible.
