Converting Units of Measure

Yesterday we began converting units within a given measurement system to include length, weight/mass, and volume. We have only studied and practiced with volume in the English system for now. Who can give conversions from the “Gallon Man” you were to memorize for homework. (one gallon=4 quarts; 1quart=2 pints; 1 pint=2 cups; 1 cup=8 fluid ounces) 4 quarters = one dollar and 4 quarts = one gallon

Metric System Memory Aid The metric system is a base ten system (There are 10 millimeters in one centimeter). The prefixes are used for volume, weight/mass, and length. Just the base is different (meter, liter, or gram). Metric System Memory Aid “Mighty King Henry Died Unbelievably Drinking Chocolate Milk” Mega Kilo Hecto Deka (Unit Base) Deci Centi Milli Meter Liter Gram

The units of measure on the previous slide are ordered from largest to smallest. In other words, measures expressed using “kilo” are larger than measures expressed using “centi.” When converting to smaller measurements, move the decimal to the right. When converting to larger measurements, move the decimal to the left.

Common Metric Conversions for Volume (add the base word liter to any of the prefixes for a volume unit) 1 centiliters (cL) = 10 milliliters (mL) 1 liter (L) = 100 centiliters (cL) =1,000 milliliters (mL) 1 kiloliter (kL) = 1,000 liters (L) = 100,000 centiliters (cL) = 1,000,000 milliliters (mL)

When you see a whole number (40), there is actually a decimal to the right of the digit in the ones place (40.0), but it is often not written if there are no digits beyond the ones place. This is very important for you to remember.

When converting in the metric system, you can take the unit you are given and then just count places to the right or left using this memory aid to discover the equivalency in another unit. If converting to a smaller unit, the decimal will be moved to the right. If converting to a larger unit, the decimal will be moved to the left. For example, to convert 2 liters to milliliters, count how many places to the right Milli (Milk) is from Liter (Unit – Unbelievably). It is three places over. So, the decimal needs to be moved over three places to the right. 2.0 L = 2,000 mL

If converting from a smaller unit to a larger unit, such as convert 3,000 liters to kiloliters, the same steps will be followed, except the decimal will be moved to the left. Count over from Liter (Unit – Unbelievably) to Kiloliter (King) using the memory aid, it is three places. So the decimal needs to be moved over three places to the left. 3,000.0 L = 3.0 kL

Example #1 Convert 50 kiloliters to liters 50 kL = 50,000 L

Example #2 Convert 90 deciliters to liters 90 deciliters = 9 liters

Example #3 200 milliliters = ____ centiliters 200 mL = 20 cL

Example #4 550 liters = ____ kiloliters 550 L = 0.550 kL

Example #5 Convert 4.5 kiloliters to milliliters 4.5 kL = 4,500,000 mL

Now it is your turn to try converting! 1) 140 milliliters = ____ centiliters 2) 25 liters = ____ hectoliters 3) 360 centiliters = ____ milliliters 4) 48,500 milliliters = ____ liters 5) 8.9 kiloliters = ____ liters

Closure: Today we began learning how to convert measurements for volume in the metric system. Do any of you have any questions. We will work on weight/mass in the next few days.
