Everett Mountaineers Sea Kayaking Followership Everett Mountaineers Sea Kayaking

Why do we paddle in groups? Safety never paddle solo – less than 3 never shall be group would be a rescue party if necessary Group Knowledge new routes, new skills to learn Friends

What makes a group? Commercial Group random people little or no knowledge follow the leader they are taken on the trip

What is a Mountaineers group? Peers paddling together Same or greater level of competency Commitment to safety Responsible in the outdoors Leaders are not guides, but fellow paddlers chosen to coordinate the activities of the group. They are volunteers.

What is important as a good follower? Arrive promptly at launch. Tides and currents won’t wait. You’ll be left behind for the safety of the group. Be ready to go the night before. Have the car packed. Make sure you have enough gas. Bring the directions to the launch. Have the leader’s cell phone with you.

Make sure you have the essentials with you Make sure you have the essentials with you. If you have forgotten something important, your trip leader could decide to leave you behind. Your gear needs to be in good working condition. Test it ahead of time, whether you own it or are renting or borrowing it from someone.

Check with the trip leader in advance to make sure this trip is a good fit for your interests and skill level. Listen to the weather ahead of time and be aware of changing conditions. Stay within voice distance of fellow paddlers. You need to be close enough to provide assistance to others.

Be aware of other group members. Stay with the group. Don’t break off and go exploring. Go only as fast as the slowest paddler in the group. If for some reason conditions worsen, stay together! You are safer in the group.

Final thoughts… Meet new people. Learn new skills, improve existing skills. Explore new routes. HAVE FUN!
