(Background of Philosophy) Declaration Web (Background of Philosophy)

1. Ancient Greek Democracy a. Rule by the people (direct democracy) Everyone vote!!! Press up and down arrows back and forth … all this voting we have to talk a lot … yap yap yap

a. Representatives elected by the people vote 2. Roman Republicanism a. Representatives elected by the people vote We have too many people for everyone to vote, so each city will send a representative.

3. The Enlightenment Solve problems using human reason Natural rights = life, liberty, & property (a good gov’t protects these rights)

4. Locke a. if the king does not respect the needs of the majority… people have the right to overthrow the king

5. Montesquieu Too much power = BAD! Gov’t should NOT be controlled by king… power should be divided Too much power = BAD!

6. Paine “Common Sense” – Jan. 1776 150,000 copies  2.5 million people -- written in “common” & “simple” language so that all people could understand c. Wanted radical action for the colonies -- independence from Britain -- wanted the common people to elect ALL of their gov’t -- denounced the king & aristocrats of Britain as frauds & parasites

“ The cause of America is in a great measure the cause of all mankind “The period of debate is closed. Arms as the resource decide the contest … everything that is right or reasonable pleads for separation. The blood of the slain, the weeping voice of nature cries, ‘TIS TIME TO PART” Thomas Paine “Common Sense” 1776

7. Jefferson & The Declaration of Independence List of grievances: Imposing taxes w/o consent Maintaining a standing army in peacetime Cutting off trade Inciting hostility among the Indians July 4, 1776 “All men are created equal” All men are born with natural rights that cannot be taken away by a gov’t  “unalienable rights” -- life, liberty & the pursuit of happiness d. Denounced king as a tyrant who made American independence necessary Ahead of the social & economic reality of the new US (many signers owned slaves)  but would inspire the future to improve

Declaration of Independence People have a natural right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness If a government does not respect people’s natural rights, the people have the right to form a new government. The British government has repeatedly violated the American colonists’ rights! (LIST OF COMPLAINTS) The American colonies are free and independent states, no longer ruled by the British government --- By Thomas Jefferson

Umm, how about “we hold these truths to be … self-evident.” Oh, Okay. Thanks, Ben! Umm, how about “we hold these truths to be … self-evident.” WHOA! wait a minute...

Okay, lets Review...

Because the king has flouted (violated) our natural rights the colonies are justified in cutting our connection! We agree! Lets sign!!! We agree! Lets sign!!! We agree! Lets sign!!!

“We must hang together, or we will hang separately!” 8. Signers “We mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes & our sacred honor.” Now rebels / traitors to the crown!! “We must hang together, or we will hang separately!”

Food for thought?
