Chapter 3 Case Studies

Gerald Fit Mason 1957 – man pointed gun at 4 teens, robbed them, and raped one of the girls; stole car; ran red light; shot & killed two officers when pulled over 2 hours later – 1949 Ford found abandoned Dusted for prints – found 2 latent thumb prints on steering wheel No match

2003 – (46 years later) – rechecked latent prints Used digital fingerprinting technology to make digital copies Stitched together prints Ran through IAFIS Match to Gerald Fit Mason

Mason arrested 1/24/2003 for rape, murder, robbery 3/21/2003 – confessed 2 life sentences

Roger Reece Kibbe I-5 strangler Decade long murder spree along Interstate 5 near Sacramento Victims – strangled, bound, hair cut, clothes cut in unusual pattern All similarities  same suspect Kibbe charged with killing 17-year-old runaway Darcie Frackenpohl

Used microscopic & fiber analysis Comparison microscope – - rope in Kibbe’s car same kind used to strangle Darcie Electron Microscope – - showed ropes had 10 elements in common & paint sprayed near each rope, traces of same air contaminants

May 10, 1991 - Reece sentenced to 25 years to life

Career Latent fingerprint expert
