Unit 11 The sounds of the world

Before-learning: Discuss these questions with your classmates. (1). What kind of music do you like? (2). When you listen to a song, do you listen to the words or the music? Why? (3). Do you play any musical instrument? (4). What is your favourite instrument? (5). Do you like to listen to music from other countries? Why?

Listening Part Listen to the three songs on the tape and then fill out the form below.

Speaking: Work together with your partner. Take turns asking for and giving advice. Look at some situations I give you, then make a dialogue and act it out.

Situation Student A Student B 1 You want to buy a CD for your friend’s birthday, but you are not sure what to buy. Ask your partner to give some suggestions. Your partner needs your advice. Please help him or her to make a decision.

Example: JOE: Hi Susan! Can you help me decide what to buy for Peter’s birthday? SUSAN: Sure. What do you have in mind? JOE: Well, Peter loves music, so I thought I would give him a CD. SUSAN: That’s a great idea! What kind of music does he like? _________________ ___________________________

JOE: I’m not sure. Oh yes, he likes rock music. SUSAN: Rock music? Hm, maybe you could give him the new Ricky Martin CD. JOE: Ricky Martin? That’s not rock music. Peter wouldn't’t like that. SUSAN: How about a Rolling Stones CD? JOE: Yes, that’s a good suggestion. He loves the Rolling Stones. _______________ __________________________________

Situation Student A Student B 2 Your partner needs your advice. Please help him or her to decide what to do. You want to find a good song to dance to. You like dancing, but you’re not sure what song you should play.

Situation Student A Student B 3 Your partner needs your advice. Please help him or her to decide what to do. Your classmates have asked you to pick a special song that will represent your class. It should be a song that everybody likes and that shows the spirit of your class. Ask your partner to help you.
