How Can Lasallian Social Justice Priorities Influence “The unexamined life is not worth living.” The Apology, Line 38a Expanding the Debate Note: With 27 slides, this presentation is thematic rather than chronological. De La Salle tells us that it was the Spirit, working through others including Adrien Nyel and Nicholas Roland, that led him to establish what he called the Christian and Gratuitous Schools and the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. Gratuity identifies that the Brothers’ schools were free for ALL, even those who could pay a fee. Gratuity also has a theological/spiritual dimension, that is, access to God’s salvation should have no cost. The school is an instrument of the reign of God to provide salvation. How Can Lasallian Social Justice Priorities Influence the Electoral Process

Text and Context Modern Catholic Social Teaching Rerum Novarum (On Capital and Labor, Pope Leo XIII, 1891

St. Pope John XXIII: “The sum total of social conditions, which allow people, either as groups or individuals, to reach their fulfillment, more fully and more easily.” Pacem in Terris, 55, 1963.

Justice in the World, 1971 and participation in the Action on behalf of justice and participation in the transformation of the world fully appear to us as a constitutive dimension of the preaching of the Gospel, or, in other words, of the Church's mission for the redemption of the human race and its liberation from every oppressive situation.

What does moving from charity to justice look like?

Mason Temple, Memphis, TN 3 April 1968 “developing a dangerous unselfishness” listening to Martin Luther King, Jr. at Mason Temple, Memphis, TN 3 April 1968 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixfwGLxRJU8 The Le grand chantre was an ecclesiastical dignitary, sometimes an administrative or ceremonial officer, connected with the cathedral church. As a continuation of time when the only school may have been the cathedral school, by the late 17th century this official still exercised power over church-run schools. Joly was the Superintendent of Schools in Paris.

Transform the Jericho Road “A true revolution of values will soon cause us to question the fairness and justice of many of our past and present policies. On the one hand, we are called to play the Good Samaritan on life’s roadside, but that will be only an initial act. One day we must come to see that the whole Jericho Road must be transformed so that men and women will not be constantly beaten and robbed as they make their journey on life’s highway. True compassion is more than flinging a coin to a beggar. It comes to see that an edifice which produces beggars needs restructuring.” Martin L. King, Jr.
