Reading, Writing and Robie House A collaborative educational experience between the Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust and the GATE Program students in School District 159. Reading, Writing and Robie House

The project is based on the novel, The Wright 3, by Blue Balliett and Chicago’s Frederick C. Robie House, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The Robie House is featured within the mystery novel and together the novel and the Robie House have exposed the students to: art architectural design rigorous architectural vocabulary complex text historical fiction geographical representations shared inquiry mathematical geometric relationships critical thinking puzzles the University of Chicago and its campus most importantly, the creative genius of Frank Lloyd Wright and his contribution to both Chicago and global architecture.

ARCHITECTURAL TOUR roof and window designs The GATE Program met at the Marya Yates School and took an architectural tour of the Yates neighborhood. The students were able to discover and sketch roof designs such as, gable, gambrel, shed, mansard, and hipped styles. We also deciphered window designs including: bay, casement, Chicago style, double-hung, gothic, lunette, palladian and ribbon windows.

3D Pentominoes In the novel “The Wright 3”, supersleuth, Calder, uses his set of pentominoes to help solve the mystery. IN the novel, The Wright 3, supesleuth, Cald Froebel Blocks

FROEBEL BLOCKS were favorites of Frank Lloyd Wright when he was a child and he used them throughout his life as a creative tool for many of his architectural designs. Students manipulated the blocks to make predetermined designs.
