4-3 Standard Form Goal: Write a linear equation in standard form. Eligible Content: A1.1.2.1.1 / A1.1.2.1.3 / A1.2.2.1.3

Vocabulary Standard Form – any linear equation in the form Ax + By = C, where A, B and C are integers. A should be a positive number! Integers – positive and negative whole numbers. No fractions or decimals.

Steps Get rid of fractions and decimals: Multiply by denominator of fraction. Get all variables on the same side of the equal sign. Get all constants on the other side of the equal sign. Make sure the x coefficient is positive.

Write the equation y = 3x + 2 in Standard Form. y = 3x + 2 -3x -3x -3x + y = 2 Change all signs so 1st term is positive: 3x – y = –2

Examples y = -6x + 1 2x = y + 2 4x + 6y – 2 = 8 y + 2 = x Write each equation in Standard Form. y = -6x + 1 2x = y + 2 4x + 6y – 2 = 8 y + 2 = x y + 5 = 2(x – 4) 6x + y = 1 10x – 2y = 10 4x + 6y = 10 2x – 3y = 6 2x – y = 13

Write y – 3 = 2(x + 4) in standard form. A. –2x + y = 5 B. –2x + y = 11 C. 2x – y = –11 D. 2x + y = 11

Practice Write each equation in Standard Form. 4x – y – 7 = 0 y = –5x + 2 y = 3x – 8 y = 5 2 x + 9 y = − 1 3 x – 4 y + 7 = –5(x + 3) 4x – y = 7 5x + y = 2 3x – y = 8 5x – 2y = –18 x + 3y = –12 5x + y = –22
