Modern History Vocabulary

1. Apartheid (In South Africa) A policy or system of segregation or discrimination on grounds of race.

2. Nelson Mandela  A South African anti- apartheid revolutionary, politician and philanthropist who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999.

3. European Union (EU) A politico-economic union of 28 member states that are located primarily in Europe.

4. NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) A regulation implemented January 1, 1994 in Mexico, Canada and the United States to eliminate most tariffs on trade between these nations.

5. Mohandas Gandhi The preeminent leader of Indian independence movement in British- ruled India. 

6. Civil Disobedience The refusal to comply with certain laws or to pay taxes and fines, as a peaceful form of political protest.

7. Arab-Israeli Conflict  A conflict between the Israelis and the Arabs in the Middle East. The United Nations established Israel, a nation under control of Jews, in Palestine in the late 1940s, in territory inhabited by Palestinian Arabs.

8. Israel A nation created on November 29, 1947 after the United Nations General Assembly voted 33 to 13.

9. OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries) A group whose goal is to manage the supply of oil in an effort to set the price of oil on the world market.

10. Terrorism The use of violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political aims.
