Presentation transcript:

Where We Started (The story of us) ED & Board only focused on grants and events Jocelyn was a department of one Very little database use No peer-to-peer fundraising system Beginning to rebuild a lapsed committee

Story continues Lovisa left non-profit gig as a Sr Director Seeks volunteer opportunity with shared values Interested in development work; transferable skills and she likes fundraising Expert at being department of one Opportunity to use strategic development skills and develop new muscles

What Changed for Jocelyn Identified priorities → resources Growing individual giving program Capital campaign Work smarter, not harder (with data!) Distributed the work → sustainability Fundraising Committee developed momentum fueled by leadership of its core members Hired Tech & Admin Specialist Contract grantwriters

What Changed for Lovisa Strategic skills used (mightily) Great seat at Gala/gratis/Bryan Stevenson House Party introduce friends to Ella Baker Center Ongoing conversations about race and class Friendship with Jocelyn New Board Member connecting our amazing committee work to EBC Board Learning: Books not Bars, Policy Work, Healthcare not Handcuffs, Jobs not Jails, Brightspots oppty pd for by EBC, SalesForce

What Changed At Large Greater integration across staff, board, and Committee Moves Mgmt. System & Recognition Plan Drew on Jocelyn’s work plan for Committee goals and roles Peer-to-peer fundraisers, cultivation, and stewardship Committee members taking on more (formalized roles) Comm. Chair, Facilitator, Notes Increased resp. Campaign Chair, Board Member Pre Mtng Prep to develop agenda

Recruitment Process Committee grows wide Make up of Committee Leveraging allies & interest since election Recruitment at EBC membership monthly mtngs Make up of Committee Considerations: race, class, representation, and allyship Set quantifiable fund raising goals Considered access and equity Referred to historical data

Bright Spot Themes @ EBC Fundraising is distributed more broadly, reaching new supporters Building authentic relationships, community, and common purpose among FC members, staff, board Using database and building new systems Support around collaboration Byron & Bright Spots Cohort!

2016 Committee Accomplishments Peer-to-Peer Fundraisers: 6 Total P2P Giving: $6,920.52 Average raised/page: $988.65 Average donors/page: ~12 Fundraising goal reached: 2* of 6 *some are still ongoing Dan, Lovisa, Becky, Holly, and Tessa created a P2P page

Challenges & Lessons Collaborative fundraising is hard & requires forging new collective culture Building trusting relationships is essential for advancing new ideas and practices Staff support and inform Committee’s work, but there are many tasks that can be delegated

Where We Are Going Launching Campaign in June (2nd Committee) Increasing Board fundraising engagement Committee set 2017 goal of raising $10K through peer-to-peer fundraisers Development of P2P Toolkits Committee owning big pieces of cultivation & stewardship Jocelyn will keep breathing
