GEM Upgrade Projects: Schedule Alexei Safonov (Texas A&M University) GEM Upgrade Projects: Schedule

US Responsibilities USCMS Phase-2 Upgrade (NSF Scope): GE2/1 and ME0: Optohybrid on-chamber board, links, backend (xTCA-based) Non-negligible schedule inter-connections Connected with production schedule Two projects But GE2/1 & ME0 schedules shifted relative to each other

Global Schedule GE1/1 GE2/1 ME0 Focus on resource & facility use leveling Schedule avoids overlapping similar stages of development for different projects while respecting external constraints Floats of 6+ months between foil production stages Floats of 6+ months between Detector Module Assembly stages Floats of 6+ months between Installable Unit (super-chambers/chambers/stacks) assembly stages GE1/1 GE2/1 ME0

Organization and Planning USCMS manager: David Saltzberg Systems Engineering: Responsible for keeping an eye on interfaces, dependences and part of reviews System engineering has been added specifically at the NSF request Tom Gorski – GEM Systems engineer Mike Matveev – CSC Systems engineer

Important Dates TDR: June 2017 (internal CMS version) CMS cost model mostly consistent with the NSF-based US CMS planning There are some select issues, specifically ME0 cost can increase significantly if we do not switch to lpGBT Reviews (not including internal USCMS ones): April 2017 – NSF pre-PDR Early 2018 – PDR (TDR will be already available) Funding: R&D funding is via NSF (small budgets in FY16 and 17, increase in 18 and 19) Project funding starts in FY20 Constraint for construction project and schedules

GE2/1 Detector Currently assumed layout: 48 VFATs per chamber Total 12 CTP7 Currently assumed layout: 48 VFATs per chamber 6 bi-directional links (GBT) 8 uni-directional links (trigger) 12 CTP7s (+1 spare) CTP7 OH 2 CSC OTMB OH 1 Trigger links GBT links Evaldas Juska (TAMU) 20 degree chamber Total: 72 chambers

ME0: High Granularity Version 20 degree chamber (48 VFATs) Total: 216 chambers Two problems: TP cost has been underestimated TP costed a 24 VFAT version, which is lower granularity than what simulation considers the default now Proposal: switch to low power GBT Allows a large reduction in the number of links and less CTP7s Reduces cost overrun: in apple-to-apple comparison, regular GBT version costs ~1M CHF more High granularity version (48 VFATs): Total 18 CTP7s (+2 spares) Total link count per chamber 2 bi-directional link (LpGBT) 4 uni-directional links (trigger) Requires 2 OHs per chamber and doubles the number of LV channels OH 1 OH 2 CTP7 Total 18 CTP7s Trigger links LpGBT links Evaldas Juska (TAMU)
