Appendix A Safety Appendix Heat or Fire When working with heat or fire… Wear safety goggles Use tongs to move hot objects Pull long hair back Roll up sleeves Do not put hands or face over boiling containers Use heat proof glassware Do not point an open, heating container at another person Never heat liquids in a closed container Turn off heat source when done Electrical Hazards When using electricity… Tape cords to the floor Keep cords away from heat and water Do not touch cords with wet hands Grasp and pull from the plug when disconnecting from socket Turn all all electrical devices when done Sharp/Pointed Objects When using sharp objects… Place object being cut on a flat surface, never in your hand Walk when transporting sharp objects Cut away from yourself and others Always handle sharp instruments with care

Appendix A Safety Appendix Chemicals Working with chemicals… Wear safety goggles and aprons Refer to MSDS sheet for appropriate uses and safety procedures Dispose of trash according to teacher, directions, or MSDS sheet Keep hands away from eyes and face Label all containers that hold chemical Keep all lids of containers closed Do not smell the chemical directly, waft the odor towards you Corrosive Chemicals Warning: Corrosive substances may cause tissue damage if it comes into contact with skin Contact with skin can be create a slight irritation/minor burn, or can destroy body tissue Working with corrosive substances… If chemicals get on your skin or clothes, notify the teacher immediately Always add acids and basses to water, not the other way around Don’t forget… Always follow your teacher’s instructions about lab modifications, clean up, or any other special instructions Know the location of all safety equipment in the lab Notify teacher if you are allergic to any of the materials used in the lab
