English Department Hiring Justification Spring 2016
Again? Didn’t English just get a new hire? Doesn’t English request a new hire every semester?
Yes Fall 2014 full-time hire increased our department to seven full-timers Better than the deficit we had been running Still far fewer than the twelve full-timers we had when the grandma among us was hired, 16 years ago Our department FTEF (productivity) has increased from 9.27 in Fall 2009 to 11.28 in Spring 2015, and again to 12.6 in Spring 2016, meaning we have the load for at least 12 FT faculty
The Data Shows… From 13/14 – 14/15 Load: 394 - 396 Fill Rate: 89.7- 93.1 From 09/10 – 14/15 Sections: 84 – 126 From Fall 09 – Spring 15 FTEF: 9.27 – 11.28
Increasing Numbers Our department offers enough courses to employ 12 full time English faculty, offering everyone a full load.
Why Not Adjuncts? We love adjuncts! We have wonderful adjuncts, which is a good thing as they teach more than half of students taking English courses. However . . .

Specialized Adjuncts are Scarce Given the need to accelerate student progress, our department has developed accelerated/integrated English courses that: Require faculty versed in reading and composition pedagogy Require well-trained faculty who are hard to find The last few semesters we have been had to scramble to fill or cancel courses because we cannot find adjuncts to teach them
Cañada Needs More FT Faculty Given our productivity, fill rates, and the scarcity of qualified specialized English adjuncts, we feel one of these new FT faculty members should be in English.
