Independent Reading Time

Bell-ringer Write any knowledge you have about Labor Unions? What are they? How did they help? How did they hurt?

3 Slides of Notes The conditions in factories were very poor. There were little to no safety regulations. Child labor was a problem. And bosses could make people work as long as they wanted (with no overtime).

Labor Unions Unions begin to form to protect the rights of workers. They fight for shorter work days, higher wages, and improved safety in the workplace. Many unions lead sit-ins, strikes, and sometimes even riots.

Strikes Many strikes and sit-ins begin to happen in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The Unions organize workers, and lead demonstrations against corrupt and unfair businesses. Some were successful, and some ended in violence.

Activity Break into small groups. Each group will be assigned a labor union or an event from the early 1900s. Your group will have only 20 minutes to research it and become experts. Each group will then share their findings with the class while the class takes notes.

Activity Each group must: Describe their term and its significance. Explain why the event or union formed/happened. Talk about whether or not it was successful. Explain what the people in the union or strike wanted to accomplish. Include a few interesting facts about their term. Present their findings to the class.
