Categorizing Books 101 Books are placed into two categories: Fiction and Nonfiction What does fiction and nonfiction mean? What is an example of each? Dewey Decimal Classification System Categorizing books 103 Dewey Decimal Classification System The DDC was developed by Melvil Dewey who, at the time, was a college student. He went on to create the first library school. His system is used in all libraries/Media Centers in order for anyone in any library or Media Center to be able to locate any book. Call numbers for non fiction books are arranged by ten different subjects, ranging from 000 – 900
