Course Goals: In Writing, you will: In Reading, you will: write a 5-paragraph paper write an outline, rough draft, and a final draft of each topic type 2 papers using Microsoft Word. In Reading, you will: choose a short novel to read which is appropriate to your level and comprehension. work in pairs or groups and summarize and give vital important details regarding your novel to your classmate(s) once a week. write a short book report and turn it in on the day of your book report presentation at the end of the session. be reading short stories and working together in small groups.
Class Materials: Writer’s at Work: The Short Composition by Ann O. Strauch (Cambridge, 2005) (CLASS SET) Your choice of any 2 or 3 leisure readings/Novels around 100 - 130 pages. You must finish reading before July 28th and be ready to write a book report summary for each book read. Supplementary readings provided by the instructor English Dictionary (paper or electronic) 8.5" x 11" lined paper and pen/pencil
Evaluation Your progress in this course is assessed through 2 or 3 leisure book reports. You will finish them before the end of the session. You will also submit 4 final drafts about your partner, a restaurant, about your birth city, and feelings and opinions about something.
Journals Journals: Three journal entries are due Thursdays from Week 2 - Week 5. Each entry should be a minimum of a half a page long. Write your name and date for each entry. I recommend getting one notebook for your journals. Journal entries can be about your day, taken from one of Ms. Danielsen's journal prompts. See handout for details.
Book Reports You will choose two or three books to write a report on over the summer. You will write a book report on these books and share them with classmates. You can also use this as an opportunity to sign up for the Give Me 30 Reading Program

True or False Good writers are born with the gift of writing. Good writers can write a good paper on the first try. Good writers never have bad grammar or spelling mistakes. Good writers use complex sentences and obscure vocabulary. Good writers never need feedback.
Writing Process Writing is a messy, creative process that involves several drafts and much editing and revision. There are many steps to the writing process. What are they?

Diagnostic Writing Prompt: What’s the most difficult part of learning English for you? What do you struggle with when writing? You will have 45 minutes to write this essay. You may write single space or double space.
