Family law What does family law deal with? How can a family be defined? What is marriage? Which marriages are voidable? What is the only ground for divorce under English law? Which remedies are available to the victims of domestic violence?

Translate the following paragraph: The most widely accepted definition of marriage in the law has for a long time been that given in Hyde v Hyde and Woodhouse: ‘the voluntary union for life of one man and one woman to the exclusion of all others’. While it is true that in English law marriage must be monogamous and voluntary, it is no longer necessarily entered into by one man and one woman, as same sex marriage became legal in England and Wales with the passage of the Marriage (Same Sex Couple) Act in 2013.

Read the paragraph about domestic violence and supply the missing words. Domestic violence can be defined as any incident of _____________________________ between adults who are or have been intimate partners or family members, regardless of ________________________. Abuse may occur in many forms and that it is not restricted to people living together, but also includes violence between ____________________________________. Under the ____________________ Act 1996, the victim of domestic violence (the applicant) can seek a court order that the abuser (the respondent) does not molest them (______________________ order) and secondly, that the molester leave and stay away from the family home (________________________ order).

Domestic violence can be defined as any incident of threatening behaviour, violence or abuse (psychological, physical, sexual, financial or emotional) between adults who are or have been intimate partners or family members, regardless of gender or sexuality. Abuse may occur in many forms and that it is not restricted to people living together, but also includes violence between family members and intimate partners. Under the Family Law Act 1996, the victim of domestic violence (the applicant) can seek a court order that the abuser (the respondent) does not molest them (non- molestation order) and secondly, that the molester leave and stay away from the family home (occupation order).
