Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration
I. General Ideas A. Photosynthesis stores energy in sugars 1. CO2 + H2O + light Glucose + O2 2. Occurs in the chloroplast B. Respiration releases energy from the sugar 1. Glucose + O2 CO2 + H2O + ATP 2. Occurs in the mitochondria
C. Who does what? 1. Plants *photosynthesis *respiration 2. Animals *we eat our food, so we do not need to make it through photosynthesis
Photosynthesis: storing energy A. CO2 + H2O +Light Sugar + O2 B. Autotrophs: make own food (plants)
C. Pigments: colored substances that absorb and reflect light 1. most common: chlorophyll 2. chlorophyll absorbs mostly reds and blues and reflects green 3. Once the light is absorbed, a sequence of chemical reactions begin a. light reactions b. dark reactions
D. Light Reactions: require light and occur in the thylakoid membrane 1. Sunlight and water are used to make ATP and NADPH to fuel the dark reactions 2. Oxygen is released
E. Dark Reactions: no light needed, occurs in the stroma 1. AKA: Calvin Cycle 2. Takes in CO2 and ATP and NADPH 3. Makes PGAL, the building block for carbohydrates (sugars)
Photosynthesis: CO2 + H2O + Light Carbohydrates + O2
Can you do it?????
III. Cellular Respiration: III. Cellular Respiration: releasing energy Glucose + O2 CO2 + H2O + ATP A. Because of photosynthesis plants and animals have a food source to break down and make ATP B. Photosynthesis stores energy and respiration releases energy C. ATP is made in the mitochondria during aerobic cellular respiration
