January 29, 2015 Objectives: ◦ Label the structure of a neuron ◦ Explain how the nervous system is broken up into parts ◦ Differentiate between neurons.
The Function & Anatomy of Neurons What is a Neuron?  It is the cell of nerve tissue that is responsive and conducts impulses within the Nervous System.
Biology 30 Unit 1: The Nervous System Intro Recap.
Types of Neurons and Nerve Impulses. Parts of a Neuron Cell body Axon – nerve fiber running from cell body to synapse Synapse – terminating end of neuron.
DENDRITES CELL BODY AXON MYELIN SHEATH GLIAL CELL / GLIA NODE OF RANVIER.
The Nervous System. Introduction In all animals, except the sponges, responses to stimuli depend on the activities of networks of nerve cell, or neurons.
Most axons of the nervous system are surrounded by a myelin sheath (myelinated axons) The presence of myelin speeds up the transmission of action potentials.
LECTURE 12: MYELIN AND SALTATORY CONDUCTION
NEURON ANATOMY. NEURON Dendrites: (dend = tree) cell processes that carry electric impulses from an incoming nerve to a cell body. Hundreds per neuron.
Parts of the neuron. The Parts of the Neuron 1. Dendrites - receive incoming messages to the nerve cell - resemble tree branches.

Axonal conductance supported by glial cells - Bársony Szabolcs -

Glial cells

Features of myelinated fibers in the PNS Schwann cells rotate around the axon Resulting in the formation Concetric, multi-laminar stucture myelin 80% lipid + 20% protein Not continuous  Ranvier nodes Seed up the propagation Myelinated fibres within the CNS Oligodendrocytes  provide support insulation to axons creating the myelin sheath extend its processes to 50 axons Ranvier nodes also exist

Saltatory conduction VS So the propagation..! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saltatory_conduction#/media/File:Saltatory_Conduction.gif
