Presentation transcript:

A Strategy for Monitoring Comprehension Read, Write, and Talk A Strategy for Monitoring Comprehension

Hmmmmmm… What am I learning? to talk about the text and my “tracks” of thinking with others Why am I learning this? to help me become a better reader and thinker How will I know that I have learned it? when I can discuss text with a partner and explain how the conversation helped me better comprehend the text

Strategy for Monitoring Comprehension: Read, Write, and Talk As teachers remember to… Set purpose for reading text Preteach vocab Begin by reading and modeling how YOU leave tracks Gradually release students as appropriate Read text and leave “tracks” (text codes AND thinking on paper) Discuss thinking “tracks” with a partner (Outer Inner Circle, Rally Coach style, etc. Just be sure to model what it looks like and sounds like. )

Video Clips from my kiddos…

When you finish talking with your partner, please convey… something that you think is important to remember from the text (or teacher’s choice) how talking to a partner helped you better comprehend the text any lingering questions that you may still have

Comprehension Skills in Math Activate schema? Visualize? Make connections? Questions? Determining importance?
