How Children Learn fun independent challenge social outdoor experiences explore consolidate interactive

Learning Through Play Consistent approach across East Renfrewshire. Children are given opportunities to take ownership of learning. Mixture of teacher led, teacher initiated and child initiated learning experiences.

Teacher led learning – teaching a new concept or skill to a group or class. Teacher initiated learning – children complete an independent task set by the teacher related to skills they have been learning. Child initiated learning – pupils can select ‘loose parts’ in the classroom to expand their skills and knowledge across different areas of learning.

Reading in school Blending Children look at the letters, say the sounds and hear the word; this is blending. Teacher says the sounds and the child listens for the words e.g. d / o / g Pupils read and say the sounds and listen for the word themselves. With this skill they have the ability to read any regular word.

Tricky Words Tricky words are frequently used words that the children are unable to read and write simply by blending and listening for the sounds. e.g. she, the, are Identify which part of the word is tricky, e.g. ‘of’ – ‘o’ is regular, but ‘f’ is making ‘v’ sound. Revise tricky words daily in class and introduce new ones when the children are confident at reading the ones they have.

Reading By teaching letter sounds, blending techniques and irregular keywords, the children understand before being asked to read books for themselves that there is a code to reading and that most words can be worked out. Devoting time to letter work at the beginning leads to higher reading abilities. Reading books – Story World
