We use "this" if a thing or a person is CLOSE. When do we use "this"? We use "this" if a thing or a person is CLOSE. This = singular

This - Examples This is a pencil. This is an eraser. This is a laptop computer.

We use "that" if a thing or a person is FAR. When do we use "that"? We use "that" if a thing or a person is FAR. That = plural

That - Examples That is a chair. That uniform is blue. That cellphone is new. That watch looks cool.

Rules "That" is often contracted to "That's". "That" can't be contracted in the plural form. This, these, and those can't take contractions.
