What the Bible Says about

and Enslavement

“Jesus replied, ‘I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.” John 8:34 NIV

“Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey – whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?” Romans 6:16 NIV

All of Us are Slaves to Something Either we are slaves to SIN This is not talking about unknowing or incidental sin, or sin committed in weakness or ignorance . . . This is talking about a continuing lifestyle of sin – living only to please the sinful nature – Romans 6:15-16; 8:5; Ephesians 4:17-19; 1 John 3:4-10

All of Us are Slaves to Something Or we are slaves to righteousness Not perfect – No one is totally righteous – Romans 3:10, 23 This is someone who is always striving to do what is right and good, always seeking to please God!

SIN is a Horrible Master It’s like a bad addiction It makes big promises but never delivers! It draws you in slowly and then enslaves you – Romans 6:19-21; 7:14-23 “Sow a thought reap an action, sow an action reap a habit, sow a habit reap a character, sow a character reap a destiny.”

SIN is a Horrible Master We must not give the devil a foothold! Temptation is the doorway to sin – James 1:14-16; 1 Cor. 10:13 The devil is like a door to door salesman – Ephesians 4:26-27; Genesis 4:6-7

“But thanks be to God that, though you use to be slaves to sin, you wholeheartedly obeyed the form of teaching to which you were entrusted. You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.” Romans 6:17-18 NIV

Righteousness is a Chosen Lifestyle We must choose to pursue righteousness It begins by putting our trust in Jesus! – John 3:16; 8:31-32 Repentance and baptism are super significant – Acts 2:36-41; Romans 6:1-3 Then we must fill our lives with righteousness – 2 Timothy 2:22; Luke 11:24-26

Righteousness is a Chosen Lifestyle We must stay committed to this pursuit! It must be a wholehearted commitment – Romans 6:17; Matthew 6:33; Romans 8:5-14; Colossians 3:1-3 It‘s a daily commitment – Luke 9:23; Romans 12:1-2

Our Choice has Eternal Consequences The wages of sin is Death – Romans 6:23a Sin is the reason we die physically – Genesis 3; Romans 5:12 Ultimately, sin leads to spiritual death – Matthew 25:41-46

Our Choice has Eternal Consequences The gift of God is Eternal Life Romans 6:23b Jesus came to set us free from SIN – John 10:10; 8:31-32, 36 We now have the ability to overcome sin and live a righteous life! God has promised eternal life in Heaven to all who trust in Jesus and live a righteous life – Matthew 25:31-46
