New Teacher Meeting August 19, 2014

Basic Procedures Taking Attendance Late to Class Hallway and Bathroom Passes Fire Drills Using Agendas

What You Need to Know Read pages 23-35 of the faculty handbook These pages go over most of what you will want to know Review the policies and procedures in the front of the student agenda book

Meeting Schedule See your interdisciplinary team leader for the grade-level schedule Faculty meetings are held on the first Monday of the month Disciplinary team meetings are held on the second Monday of the month Non-tenured teacher meetings are held on the third Monday of the month. Required for non-tenured, optional for all staff Leadership team meetings are held every Wednesday

Parking Parking is pretty limited Park in spaces or along the curb on the tennis court side Overflow parking is in the pool parking lot (continue out of our parking lot through the stop sign, this lot is on the right) DO NOT park on the curb on the school side

Attendance Procedures: Teachers Teachers sign in on the bulletin board on the wall opposite the teacher mailboxes in the office If you need to leave, there is a sign out sheet on a clipboard below the sign in sheet Utilize SmartFind Express (substitute system) ASAP if you will be out Be sure to fill out a leave form. These are located behind Ann Yetter’s desk

Attendance Procedures: Students Homeroom teachers post attendance by 8:00 Any students arriving after 8 should be sent to guidance to sign in Post ASPEN attendance within the first 5 minutes of each class Call/Email Ann Stout, the guidance secretary, with any discrepancies or changes

Hall Passes Students use the back of their agenda books NOTE: This is different from last year’s procedure! A laminated sheet will be provided for students who forget No more than 2 students in the hall at the same time Make certain students sign in and sign out Remember to call the media center before sending students Call ahead if you are going to be keeping a student into the next class

Using Computers Students will not be permitted to use computers until they have returned all of their signed forms and go through training Wait until Sarah Russo gives you the go-ahead to use computers with your classes Use the link on the WLMS media center page to check availability Email Sarah Russo and Tahesha Todd with your request. Include whether you want netbooks, macbooks, etc. Include the purpose Include how many you need Each cart is named after a type of shark and is located in a classroom or the media center Put the computers away NEATLY

Classroom Levels Redirect with non-verbal cues and humor first Level 1 – a verbal warning and/or private conference with student Level 2 – Time out in your class Level 3 – Time out in partner teacher’s room Must be documented on IR and parent called Focus on RESTITUTION and RESTORATION, not RETRIBUTION

Positive Behavior Supports Discipline Breakdowns as Teachable Moments Gotchas, Positive Office Referrals, Positive Calls/Messages Home and Other Rewards Principles of Shaping Behavior Reward (notice) what you want to encourage Ignore what you want to extinguish (negative attention is reinforcing) Intermittent Reinforcement gets best results Praise positive effort and improvement Three to Five positive comments for every negative
