What are the parts of an atom? Section 14-2
Structure of an atom Atom Particles of an atom Nucleus Center or core Neutron Neutral particles Proton Positive particles Electron Surrounds nucleus and are negatively charged Particles of an atom Atom
Thomson’s Model First scientist (1897, England) to hypothesize that an atom was made up of a positively charged material with electrons.
Rutherford’s Model (1908, New Zealand) Tested Thomson’s model and found that an atom is mostly empty space and that protons are contained in the nucleus.
Bohr’s Model (1913, Denmark) Proposed that electrons are found in energy levels found at a certain distance from the nucleus. Current model which is followed.
