Chapter 6 The Human Person

I. Made in the Image Two Creation Stories in Genesis First Story—GN 1:1-2:4 “God created humankind in his image . . .” We have capabilities beyond other creatures— self-awareness & self-knowledge

I. Made in the Image God created our spiritual aspect human soul—immortal; not separated from the body; body and soul are completely united Humans are not meant to be alone; Partnership of men and women primary form of community Stewardship—special responsibility to honor and preserve creation

II. Fall From Grace Second Creation Story emphasizes Adam and Eve, and Garden of Eden First sin—(eating of the tree of knowledge of good and evil) shows man couldn’t recognize his limits and tried to be like God; known as The Fall Consequences for all Adam and Eve’s descendents. That’s us!

III. Original Sin This sin affected all of the human race (Pg. 53 analogy—near-sightedness) Does not make us lose goodness or spiritually corrupt . . . But leads us to . . . Concupiscence- our inclination to sin Involves us in a spiritual battle of good and evil—Satan tempts us to reject God, but God promises us victory!

IV. Destined for Glory Original Sin is a result of God’s gift of Free Will—to choose our own destiny We are created in God’s likeness; God has destined us for glory and his will cannot be stopped by sin. Through the gift of Jesus, God’s Son, Adam’s sin is turned into victory Jesus is the “new” Adam

Sidebars Satan – the Devil – a very real force of evil who was once a good angel, also called Lucifer, meaning “being of light” Cast from heaven for pitting his will against the will of God Seeks to draw us into his rebellion against God Read Limbo p. 69

St. Augustine of Hippo (AD 354 – 430) Born in Tagaste, North Africa Son of a successful businessman and Christian mother – Monica Had appetite for pleasure, pride, sensuality, and wisdom – suffered depression – realized this was a disordered quest for God Significant Christian theologian – wrote extensively on Christian doctrine – especially Original Sin Autobiography – Confessions – his struggle with good & evil, his conversion, the power of grace
