Highway Transportation System (HTS) The HTS has three parts: People Vehicles Roadways The purpose of the HTS is to move people and cargo from 1 place to another in a safe, efficient, and economical way
HTS The HTS has the greatest variety of users, including drivers, passengers, motorcyclists, bicyclists, and pedestrians. The HTS has a wide range of roadways from simple rural lanes to complex multi-lane urban roads and expressways.
People Roadway users- people who use the HTS by walking, driving, or riding. Poor skills by people- Driving overly distracted Tired Ill Impaired by alcohol. Take responsibility for avoiding trouble
Vehicles Mopeds and motorcycles are small and have little protection. Larger vehicles, tractor- semitrailer weighing tons. In between are cars, vans, small trucks, buses, campers, farm vehicles, and construction equipment.
Roadways Roadways of the HTS vary from dirt lanes to complex multilane expressways. Conditions: Rain and Snow Nighttime Rough Pavement It is up to you to maintain control of your vehicle at all times and in all conditions
Regulating the HTS To make sure drivers are responsible and act in a low risk manner, all states grant individuals the privilege of driving on their roads by issuing them a driver’s license. By passing a licensing exam, you agree to obey traffic laws in exchange for the privilege to drive. Federal, state and local government agencies help to regulate the HTS.

1.2 Your Driving Task The Driving Task includes: All the social, physical, and mental skills required to drive. You must develop habits for: Using knowledge and visual skills Obeying traffic laws Judging time and space Anticipating how your car will respond under normal and emergency conditions
The IPDE Process Identify: Identify important in the ongoing driving scene. Predict: Predict when and where possible points of conflict will develop. Decide: Decide when, where, and how to communicate, adjust speed, and/or change position to avoid conflict. Execute: Execute the right action (s) to prevent conflict.
Vocab Smith System- Zone Control System- Defensive Driving- An organized method designed to help drivers develop good seeing habits. Zone Control System- A method for managing the space around your vehicle. Defensive Driving- Lowers the risk of conflict by protecting you and others from dangerous driving situations.
