What is Referencing? ♦ Acknowledging ideas or information from other people’s work in your own writing. Ask students what they think referencing is, then show the slide. If you have any questions about APA referencing, you can write it on the piece of note paper. If they aren’t answered this week, Anthea will deal with them next week.

Why do you need to reference? ♦ To show which ideas are your own, and which ideas come from another person ♦ To give support to your writing by referring to sources that are already published ♦ To let your readers know how wide and deep your research has been ♦ To let the readers check the original source themselves   Small groups discuss good reasons to reference. Then see if their ideas match those on the slide. One idea could include eg ‘to avoid plagiarism’ – this leads into the next slide.

What is PLAGIARISM? Taking another person’s ideas, writing or inventions and using them as your own Is considered to be academic theft and this is a serious offence Rewording another person’s work, without acknowledging its source is also plagiarism YOU MUST ACKNOWLEDGE THE SOURCE OF ANY INFORMATION TO AVOID PLAGIARISM.

Referencing There are 2 parts to complete: In–text referencing: minimal information quoting or paraphrasing A reference list: full reference information Click title to open up the Moodle page leading to the Basics of APA video. Then do the review section as a whole class. After that, show the rest of the slide.

Quotes and Paraphrases You can acknowledge sources by either: Quoting copy directly word for word, or rewording or rephrasing the original material  

Quoting When material is copied word-for-word from a research source – books, journals, newspapers, internet etc. Example: Book with one author “………........……” (Author’s Surname, Year of Publication, Page). “ …………………….” (Paki, 2003, p. 5). NOTE: How to remember what to include in your in-text citation: SYP (Surname; Year; Page number) Remember to use double quotation marks when you are direct quoting (not single quotation marks.)

Quoting Book with two authors “…………..” (A & B, year, p. 4). Eg “.....” (Smith & Jones, 2010, p. 4). Book with three authors “…………..” (A, B, & C, year, p. 438). Eg “.....” (Smith, Jones, & Price, 2012, p. 438). In the example of the book with 3 authors, note the comma after author B. Also note that the order of the authors in the brackets is not necessarily alphabetical. It could be, but it may also be the case that the primary author is listed first (ie the person who did the most work). Or, it could be the most senior author who is listed first (eg the first one may be a professor and the other two may be graduate assistants.)

Exercise What is the information you need for the in-text citation from page 37 of the required textbook for HLBN522? Authors: Anne McMurray and Jill Clendon Year of publication: 2015 “ ” (McMurray & Clendon, 2015, p. 37). The Wintec APA Referencing Short Guide is available for you to use if you would like (although the first example is how to reference a book with 3 to 5 authors.) In this guide, examples of the reference list entry are on the left, and how to format the in-text citation is on the right of the page. Note: The authors’ names are in the same order that they are found on the book or source, ie they aren’t necessarily in alphabetical order. If you use one page, it is p. However, if you use a range of pages, eg 37-38 then you write pp. 37-38.

Examples of “Direct Quotes” “Therefore our studies have shown that computers are an essential ingredient if people wish to be part of this current technological age” (Paki, 2003, p. 5).   As Paki’s studies (2003) similarly show, “computers are an essential ingredient if people wish to be part of this current technological age” (p. 5). “….” (Peters, as cited in Paki, 2003, p. 39). Which of these authors is shown in the Reference List? You can quote a whole sentence as in the example at the top. You can embed your quote in a sentence which you start yourself, like in the second example. If you do this, put the year after the author’s name. The third example is a ‘citation from a secondary source’ – see more about this in the full Wintec APA Guide. The author listed first in the brackets is the one whose words you quoted or paraphrased. However, the book or source that you looked at is the second author in the brackets. This is the author that you need to put in the reference list.
