FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE: POETRY

What is figurative language? the use of words that go beyond their ordinary meaning.

What is alliteration? the repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of two or more words Example: Doodling daughters draw daffodils.

What are similes and metaphors? Simile – Compares two unlike things using like or as Example: Her skin is as smooth as silk. OR Her skin is like silk. Metaphor – Compares two unlike things without using like or as Example: Her skin is silk.

What is personification? giving an animal or object human-like characteristics Example: The dish ran away with the spoon.

What is a hyperbole? An extreme exaggeration Example: That man is as big as a house! Can someone really be as big as a house?

What is onomatopoeia? a word that imitates the sound it is describing. (hiss, buzz, bang, murmur, meow, growl.) Example: "Out of reach, I pull out with a screech."

What is an idiom? (COPY) A phrase or expression that cannot be understood by knowing what the individual words in the phrase mean. In other words, the phrase cannot be taken literally. Example: Barking up the wrong tree which means to misunderstand a situation and complain to a wrong person or blame a wrong thing

How does figurative language influence poetry? It creates images in the reader’s mind, draws the reader into a scene, or reminds the reader of something familiar.

Independent Practice Using your notes, identify the type of figurative language being used in the following examples. Be prepared to explain your answers.

Guided Practice cont’d "Plop, plop, fizz, fizz, oh what a relief it is.“ I waited in line for centuries. A Chip On Your Shoulder The vines wove their fingers together to form a braid. "Life is like an onion: You peel it off one layer at a time, and sometimes you weep.“ He has the heart of a lion. Careless cars cutting corners create confusion .
