Working Pleasantly with God Joshua 10 Dr. Joseph Chang 8/25/2013 BOLGPC

Joshua 10:1-14 1Now Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had taken Ai and totally destroyed it, doing to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king, and that the people of Gibeon had made a treaty of peace with Israel and were living near them. 2He and his people were very much alarmed at this, because Gibeon was an important city, like one of the royal cities; it was larger than Ai, and all its men were good fighters. 3So Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem appealed to Hoham king of Hebron, Piram king of Jarmuth, Japhia king of Lachish and Debir king of Eglon. 4"Come up and help me attack Gibeon," he said, "because it has made peace with Joshua and the Israelites."

Joshua 10:1-14 ." 5Then the five kings of the Amorites--the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon--joined forces. They moved up with all their troops and took up positions against Gibeon and attacked it. 6The Gibeonites then sent word to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal: "Do not abandon your servants. Come up to us quickly and save us! Help us, because all the Amorite kings from the hill country have joined forces against us." 7So Joshua marched up from Gilgal with his entire army, including all the best fighting men. 8The LORD said to Joshua, "Do not be afraid of them; I have given them into your hand. Not one of them will be able to withstand you."

Joshua 10:1-14 9After an all-night march from Gilgal, Joshua took them by surprise. 10The LORD threw them into confusion before Israel, who defeated them in a great victory at Gibeon. Israel pursued them along the road going up to Beth Horon and cut them down all the way to Azekah and Makkedah. 11As they fled before Israel on the road down from Beth Horon to Azekah, the LORD hurled large hailstones down on them from the sky, and more of them died from the hailstones than were killed by the swords of the Israelites. 12On the day the LORD gave the Amorites over to Israel, Joshua said to the LORD in the presence of Israel: "O sun, stand still over Gibeon, O moon, over the Valley of Aijalon."

Joshua 10:1-14 13So the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, till the nation avenged itself on its enemies, as it is written in the Book of Jashar. The sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day. 14There has never been a day like it before or since, a day when the LORD listened to a man. Surely the LORD was fighting for Israel! (Josh 10:1-14)

Joshua 10:1-14 (1). Joshua was giving it with his full strength (v. 7). (2). God told him, be strong, you are going to win (v. 8). (3). Joshua had a surprise attack (v. 9). (4). God threw the Canaanites into a great confusion. Joshua defeated the Canaanites (v. 10). (5). As they were fleeing upward toward Beth Horon, the Israelites killed many of them (v.10).

Joshua 10:1-14 (6). As they were fleeing downward from Beth Horon, the Lord hurled down the large hailstones and killed even more enemies. (v. 11).   (7). Joshua needs more time to slaughter the enemy, and he made a crazy request to God (v. 12)  (8). God answered his crazy request and stopped the sun and moon from moving for one extra day (vv.13-14).

Joshua 10:1-14 There was no time for 40 days fast and pray. The things were moving so very fast. Joshua was using his full strength, full intelligence and cry for help. God was helping without Joshua’s request for help—hailstones; with Joshua’s request for help—miracle.

I. The Popular Thoughts about God’s Will (1). God has a perfect will for everything in my life. Who to marry? What to do? What to wear? (2). God does not care. –Deism Both are wrong, both are very mechanical.

Review the Book of Joshua (1). God was very specific in: a. How the Israelites were to cross the river of Jordan (Joshua 3). b. How they were to attack Jericho (Joshua 6). c. How they were not to rebuild Jericho (Joshua 6:26). d. How they were not to take in the things that dedicated to the Lord for destruction (Joshua 7).

Review the Book of Joshua (2). God did not seem to care what they do: a. The spies had/had no covenant with Rahab to give her asylum. b. The Israelites made/made not treaty with the Gibeonites.

Review the Book of Joshua (3). God was working together with the Israelites in great coordination In the battle over the Gibeon against the southern confederacy.

II. God is very specific in his eternal purpose. A. Bible Level To save mankind, to set up his kingdom. B. Book of Joshua Level To give the land of Canaan to Israel as inheritance. Crossing Jordan, falling Jericho, not to rebuild, devoted to destruction are all related. C. Our Level Make us his glorious church.

III. God expects us to follow his moral principle. A. Bible Level He used Abraham’s spiritual descendants to replace Abraham’s physical descendants. B. Book of Joshua Level The Israelites were free to/not to set treaty with Rahab and Gibeonnites. Once set, they were expected to follow through. C. Our Level We are free to marry whichever Christians we like, but once married, we are not to divorce.

III. God expects us to follow his moral principle. 20For no matter how many promises God has made, they are "Yes" in Christ. And so through him the "Amen" is spoken by us to the glory of God. (2Cor 1:20)

IV. Work Pleasantly With God by exercising our intelligence Illustrations

Conclusion (1). It was God’s will for them to take the land of Canaan. (2). They were doing diligently to occupy the land. (3). The request came to them from the Gibeonites whom they had made treaty with. So they honored the treaty in God’s name. God was pleased. Top with (1), God told them to fight and told them that they would win. (4). God helped them with hailstones which they did not request. (5). They functioned well with their intelligence. They needed more time to achieve the goal, so they made a crazy request to stop the sun and the moon, and surely God answered yes to this request.
