Course selection process

Who will be involved in the course selection process? You, the student – You will take on the largest role in this process because these are YOUR classes.   Your parents/guardians - Discuss your potential classes & future plans with them. They will have valuable feedback to help guide your choices. Your teachers – They will make recommendations for your core classes (English, math, science, social studies), as well as some of your elective choices. Your counselor – You’ll meet to discuss your future career plans, as well as go over your selected & recommended classes to finalize them for next year. Your counselor will also make course recommendations based upon your future career plans.

What should I expect to happen? You’ll review the sophomore elective course choices during your workrooms and over Christmas break.   Your teachers will inform you of their recommendations for you in your core courses & possibly some of your elective courses January 5th & 6th.    You will discuss your course selections with your parent/guardian. You will meet with your personal counselor individually to discuss & finalize your course selections in January.

COURSE SELECTION PACKET Review the FOUR YEAR PLAN Make sure you know the required classes for sophomore year How many electives are you able to take? Review the SOPHOMORE ELECTIVE COURSE OPTIONS Notice how the courses are organized under departments (i.e. art, business, music, etc.) Courses with an F behind the number are FULL YEAR classes Courses with an S behind the number are SEMESTER classes The Course Selection Guide with course descriptions & prerequisites are on the Richards website. Look at the top of the elective sheet for where to go to find it Courses with an * next to them means they are dual credit classes. Taking these classes means you have the POTENTIAL to earn both high school AND college credit for them   Review the CTE DUAL CREDIT PROGRAM handout Notice the benefit of taking dual credit classes See which classes can be taken for dual credit Learn what you need to do to earn college credit for these classes

Calendar Summary December 19th through January 6th-enter course electives choices for next year January 5th & 6th-meet and discuss core course recommendations with your teachers January 9th-31st- meet with counselors to discuss and confirm class placements February-April-no changes are made May 1-20-lawst chance to see your counselor about course changes for next year. Changes will only be made with parent permission and if classes have available seats so choose wisely in January!!
