Protists Mr. Fox 7th Grade Science

Protists A group of organisms that don’t fit anywhere else. Common Characteristics Cells have a nucleus All live in moist places

3 Groups of Protists 1. Animal-like protists are called Protozoans All are heterotrophs, cannot make food Most can move around All are unicellular

Protozoans Continued Sarcodines move with a pseudopod. Ex: Amoeba Cilliates – Move about using cillia, hairlike structures on their cell membrane. Ex: Paramecium Flagellates – move using a flagella, whip like tail on their cell membrane.

Flagellates and Termites Termite intestines contain Flagellates Flagellates help them digest wood, termite protects it. Mutual cooperation , both organisms benefit each other Called mutualism

Protozoans Continued Sporozoans – All are parasites, they live on other organisms. Plasmodium is a sporozoan that causes Malaria in humans.

Groups of Protists 2. Fungus like protists – are heterotrophs, have cell walls, use spores to reproduce. Can move at some point in their lives.

Groups of Protists 3. Plant like protists – commonly called Algae. All are autotrophs. Can be multicellular. Euglenoids – Green mobile algae. They can be heterotrophs under certain conditions. Usually are autotrophs.

Task (possibly homework) Page 88 and 89. List the other 5 types of algae and a brief description and example.
