Characteristics of Life

Nine Characteristics of all Living Things 1. They are made up of one or more cells 2. They reproduce 3. They move 4. They acquire and use energy 5. They grow and develop 6. They have levels of organization 7. They contain genetic information 8. They respond to their environment 9. They adapt and evolve

Cell Theory States that living things are made up of one or more cells All cells come from pre-existing cells The cell is the basic unit of life

Cellular organization The cell is the basic unit of structure and function in an organism Unicellular organisms are composed of only one cell Multicellular organisms are composed of many cells

Energy Use Organisms get energy from taking in an breaking down materials The combination of chemical reactions through which an organisms builds up or breaks down materials is called metabolism

Response to surroundings A change in the environment that causes an organism to respond is called a stimulus Stimuli include changes in light, sound, and other factors An organism reacts to stimulus with a response – an action, or change in behavior

Growth and Development All living things grow and develop Development is the process of change that occurs during an organisms life

How are living things classified? D-K-P-C-O-F-G-S Domain – Prokaryote/Eukaryote/Archaea Kingdom – Plants, Animals, Protists, Fungi, Eubacteria, Archaebacteria Phylum – 9 including Chordata Class – 7 including Mammalia Order – Include Primates Family – Including Anthropoids Genus – Homo Species - Sapien
