China 1945-1949 Winners: Communists (Mao Zedong) created the People’s Republic of China (PRC) on the mainland of China Losers: Nationalists (Chiang Kai Shek) fled to island of Taiwan to create Republic of China

Cultural Revolution 1966: Great Proletariat Cultural Revolution Goal: purge China of “bourgeois” Teenagers formed the Red Guard & kept the “Little Red Book” Attacked those they claimed were counterrevolutionaries (people in authority) Accused were publicly humiliated, beaten & sometimes killed Result: Economy slowed & civil war threatened Red Guards sent to live on communes
