STEP 1: Using your assigned map and geographic location, your group will have approximately 60 minutes to create a civilization of 1,000 people. You must write out your thoughts as you form your project. The more detail you put into your civilization the easier the next step will be!

STEP 2: Draw your civilization on an 8 ½ x 11 sheet of white paper. Put your names on the back of the paper. Your civilization drawing must be clear, labeled, neat, and it must included some color using colored pencils. When you are done with your civilization drawing, STAPLE IT TO THE BACK OF YOUR PACKET.

STEP 3: Your civilization is encountering a natural disaster. You must plan for how you will tackle this problem. Fill out the “Natural Disaster Plan” worksheet provided to your group. When your group is done with this, STAPLE the Natural Disaster Plan worksheet to the back of your packet

STEP 4: As a group, using the civilization you created, you must now create THREE artifacts. You will draw the artifacts on the sheets provided in your packet. Remember that an artifact may be a small part of a larger item. Your artifacts must be essential to your civilization. They should provide clues about daily life in your civilization. You may draw or physically create these artifacts. If you draw the artifacts, please include a description of the size and materials. DO NOT describe what they are used for or directly identify them.

STEP 5: In your group’s packet, put an “X” across the back of the 2nd-to-last page and the last page. You will not be writing on those. As a group, you will view one (1) other groups’ artifacts. Use the sheet I give your group to make comments on the artifacts. At the end of your time viewing the other group’s artifacts, write what you think each one is on the Post-It note provided.

1. Advanced cities The word “city” comes from the Latin word for civilization Cities were organized Different areas for living, farming, religion Centers of trade

2. Specialized workers Abundant agricultural yields (aka an excess of food)  opportunities for economic specialization Why? Lots of food already from farming, so we can spend time/resources in other occupations (not just farming) Demand by ruling elites for luxury items encouraged artisans and craftspeople to create new products Trade between neighboring populations encouraged creativity = need specialization to produce products to trade

4. Record Keeping Development of writing 2 purposes: 1. To keep records 2. Literary expression (stories, poems, etc.) Earliest form: Cuneiform (pictograms) symbols of the objects or things they represent Will see these in river valley civs
