Manifesto of the Communist Party Marx and Engels Manifesto of the Communist Party

A spectre is haunting Europe---the spectre of communism. All the powers of old Europe have entered into a holy alliance to exorcise this spectre: Pope and Tsar, Metternich and Guizot, French Radicals and German police-spies.

The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles.

How do communists relate to other working class people? The communists do not form a separate party opposed to other working-class parties. They have no interests separate and apart from those of the proletariat as a whole. The communists differ from other working- class parties only in that they support the common interest of all workers of all countries.

Capitalism Private ownership of industry Freedom of competition Unequal distribution of wealth Survival of the fittest No government intervention in business

Class Struggle Workers complaints Fight for fairness Revolution

Socialism The government owns industry but people can still own private property i.e. homes, cars Goal of economic equity Class distinctions are diminished All people have equal opportunity to succeed From each according to his ability to each according to his contribution Freedom of Religion

Communism Classless society achieved All means of production are controlled by the state In theory: free choice of education, religion, employment etc. In Reality: all choice is controlled by the state. Religions abolished
