Santa Anna Mexican president, dictator and general who seeks to put down the Texas Revolution and gain power over Mexico He orders the siege of the Alamo The purpose of executing survivors was to end rebellion

William B. Travis Practices law and becomes a leading voice in the rebellion against Mexico Sent a letter requesting help to "To the People of Texas and All Americans in the World,“ on February 24th Becomes the commander at the Alamo and is killed at its siege on March 6, 1836

GONZALES October 2, 1836 Mexican army sent to retrieve cannon given to Texans to protect against Native Americans Mexican Forces had to wait at river crossing due to high water Moved cannon into middle of town with sign “Come and Take It!”

Alamo February 23-March 6, 1836 There were only 183 Texans guarding the Alamo. It was the only fort between the Anglo Settlement and the Mexican Army The Mexican army had 1,800 men. The Texans held the Alamo for twelve days. On the thirteenth day, Santa Anna ordered his men to storm the fortress.

When it was over, all but five Texans were dead When it was over, all but five Texans were dead. The men not killed in the battle were executed by Santa Anna. Texans were shocked by the slaughter at the Alamo and vowed to fight for their freedom.

Goliad March 27, 1836 Colonel James W. Fannin led about 300 revolutionaries in another part of Texas while the battle at the Alamo raged on. Travis wanted him to come to San Antonio with reinforcements, but he never made it. On his way there, Mexico’s General Urrea was too close and Sam Houston ordered a retreat.

Goliad cont. They stopped in a field near Coleta Creek to rest and were surrounded by Urrea’s troops. After two days of fighting, Fannin surrendered. All the captives thought they would be returned to the US – instead, they were marched to Goliad where Santa Anna ordered that they all be executed!

Runaway Scrape When Anglo settlers heard of the massacres at the Alamo and Goliad, they feared for their lives. As Santa Anna approaches Gonzales, the people there began to flee – some all the way to Louisiana and some to places like Nacogdoches and Galveston Island.

Battle of San Jacinto April 21, 1836

San Jacinto Sam Houston gathered more troops, 800 in all. It included Tejanos, American settlers, volunteers from the United States, and many free and enslaved African Americans most were not soldiers. They met Santa Anna at San Jacinto. Their battle cry was, “Remember the Alamo!” It was over in 18 minutes. More than half the Mexican army was killed.

San Jacinto cont. Only 10 Texans killed and 30 injured including Sam Houston Santa Anna surprised by the attack, seeing defeat in sight attempts to escape capture. He makes a soldier switch clothes with him, and tries to run for it. He is caught later in the evening hiding in the tall grass of a field.
