The importance of backward design in the assessment of students Nicky Milner Department of Medicine and Healthcare Science Faculty of Medical Science
“To begin with the end in mind means to start with a clear understanding of your destination. It means to know where you’re going, so that you better understand where you are now, so that the steps you take are always in the right direction” Stephen R. Covey. The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.
Why is backward design important? Creates a focal point from the start of the learning journey to point of assessment Creates an opportunity for creativity for both staff and students during the learning journey Important for Team-Based Learning activity design
Outcome (eg assessment) Learning journey Creates space for… Innovation Creation of new knowledge Independent learning Engagement
My reflections on employing backward design Helped provide an insight into professional experience in the classroom through application of prior learning Need to identify the “need to know” material and how to “fill the gap” between the start of teaching and the final assessment point Be prepared to support the students with very clear and specific instruction, in a flexible and responsive manner during the learning journey Check module learning outcomes are appropriate and well defined
