Bellringer: What does it mean to be liberal or conservative? Are you liberal or conservative?

Liberal: favor change…they like bigger government which translate into higher taxes to pay for the many programs they support Conservative: like things to stay the same, they embrace the morals and customs of the past

Reagan’s Political Career Originally a democrat, Reagan voted for FDR in 1932. He was actively involved in the political affairs of the actor’s union. After WWII, Reagan joined the republican party. During the 1950s he was a spokesman for GE . http://www.bfi.org.uk/education/teaching/screendreams/images/ postcards_reagan_450.jpg

Reagan’s Political Career He praised capitalism and attacked government regulation and communism = clearly conservative 1966 elected governor of California. He cut back social programs, was likable, photogenic, and genial. Many thought he was too conservative to be elected president.

The Rise of Conservatism New Deal Opponents The New Deal changed the role of government and the President. Critics joined together to form the American Liberty League in 1934. http://www.poster.net/reagan-ronald/reagan-ronald-photo-xl- ronald-reagan-6234801.jpg

The Rise of Conservatism New Deal Opponents The League sought to teach respect for the rights of individuals and property and to underscore the importance of individual enterprise value’s undermined by FDR’s large government programs After FDR’s court packing – formed a bipartisan coalition that opposed any further New Deal legislation

From Eisenhower to Goldwater 1952 Eisenhower “Modern Republicanism” Accepted basic outlines of the New Deal Occasionally was some bureaucratic expansion- 1953 creation of the new Department of Health, Education and Welfare http://orrinwoodward.blogharbor.com/Eisenhower-President.jpg

From Eisenhower to Goldwater 1964 republican candidate Barry Goldwater staunchly conservative faced LBJ Goldwater opposed government activism, civil rights and anti-poverty programs, demanded a military build-up http://www.hudsonlibrary.org/Hudson%20Website/Images/Web %20Collection/Posters/Goldwater2.jpg

From Eisenhower to Goldwater He was portrayed as a dangerous extremist – crushed Analyst stated conservatism would never gain wide support. Goldwater remained in the Senate until his 1987 retirement.

The Great Society LBJ’s landslide silenced conservatives. The Great Society was an extension on the New Deal in 1965. It had something for everyone: poor, Medicare, Medicaid, schools – new Department of housing and urban development

Nixon and the Welfare State 1968 republicans wanted to trim social welfare programs, he claimed encouraged people not to work, and bring budget under control The federal government continued to grow 1970 created The Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

Social Issues Conservatives were troubled by the rapid cultural changes rock music illegal drugs the sexual revolution legalized abortion movement for gays and lesbian rights the women’s movement affirmative action = “reverse discrimination”

Turning Point: The Election of 1980 1976 Ford narrowly defeated Reagan for the republican nomination 1980 moderate republicans thought he was like Goldwater was to conservative to beat Carter http://www.ford.utexas.edu/avproj/B1272-22A.jpg

The New Right Coalition Conservatives had now formed a powerful political group called the New Right. They proposed cutting government funded social programs – concerned with the size of government and its role in the economy

The New Right Coalition Other groups in the New Right wanted to restore Christian values Televangelism, Jerry Falwell, gave sermons of specific political issues and used money to back conservative politicians http://www.foxnews.com/images/283403/0_62_fal320.jpg

A Reagan Landslide Effectively attacked Carter’s handling of the economy The Iran Hostage Crisis hurt Carter Reagan won a landslide 51% of the popular vote the republicans gained control of the Senate for the first time in 25 years
